About Book: Act II

Stratford-upon-Avon, Spring 1932. Six years after fire destroyed the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, a new troupe of actors is taking Stratford by storm. But offstage, Felix Richards suspects something is rotten in the state of Denmark. Morris Oxford feels he needs no introduction. The greatest actor of a new generation…The theatre means everything to him but his talent is tainted by the depths of his ambition. All Our Yesterdays, takes us back to where it all began. The stage is set, but uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.

My Thoughts: All Our Yesterdays by Guy Hale is a novella set in the pre-war era and acts as a prequel to The Croaking Raven. This bite-sized story follows a Shakespearean troupe of actors, each one jostling for position as they tread the boards, all while egos clash and ambition simmers beneath the greasepaint.

The main characters—Morris, Richard, and Felix—are sharply drawn, each with their own quirks and motives. Hale’s prose is as stylish and assured as ever (I’ve come to expect nothing less from him), and he handles the themes of jealousy, bribery, and manipulation with a deft hand. It’s like watching a master strategist move his pieces across a chessboard, every action has a consequence, and nothing is quite as it seems.

There’s drama, there’s wit, and running beneath it all is a quiet sadness that gives the story real depth. Despite its length, this novella doesn’t skimp on atmosphere or emotional heft and packs a punch. If you're looking for a quick read that delivers intrigue and elegance in equal measure, All Our Yesterdays is well worth your time.
