About book: When they meet, Jane and Annie have much in common. As young Irish women in the 1840s, they both know the value of family, home and friendship. Even more importantly, they understand the need to survive against a backdrop of famine, disease and cruel colonial rule. With Ireland crumbling around them and peril at every turn, can these tenacious women overcome the arc of history and create a better life?
My thoughts: This book was chosen for our monthly book club meeting and is about the time in Ireland during the famine. The book brings to life the huge struggles and consequences that many families had to deal with during the 1840s. The author especially focusses in on 2 young girls and follows their plight, journey, and choices they made before there were any government interventions or handouts and with absent landlords that placed money over people. However, the two main characters Annie and Jane are determined to shine through their suffering and show kindness to those they meet. In the end I am left wondering what other adventures they will meet and I am sure the following 2 books will reveal more. A worthwhile red from a new author.Â
