I Am The Messenger

Marcus Zusak

Genre:

Young Adult

About book: From the author of The Book Thief comes this darkly funny and ultimately uplifting thriller which proves that anyone can be extraordinary.

Ed Kennedy is just your less-than-average Joe who is hopelessly in love with his best friend, Audrey. But after he single-handedly manages to catch a bank robber, he receives a playing card in the mail: the Ace of Diamonds. This is the first message. Four more will follow. But before this particular card game can end, Ed will be changed forever . . .

Will Audrey love the man he has become?

My thoughts: This book was chosen for our book club July 2020 and was a completely different type of book to the ones I normally read. I certainly would not have gone for ‘Young Adult Fiction.’ Although I do not really believe this book to fall into this genre, when all the characters are Adults, and the story feels a little off to be set at this group of people.

The main character is a young lad who drives a cab and appears to have no future ahead of himself. He has a small group of friends and a dog he adores, and his life is full of routine until he stops a bank robbery. He then becomes the messenger through a number of playing cards that arrive at his door. He then embarks on a mission to follow the tasks, but the key is who is behind the quest.

I can honestly say that although I found this book an easy read, it was not one of my top favourites. At times I felt utterly confused as to what was going on, and other times I could not wait to see what was going to happen next. It was fast paced book in my view and the characters were believable, I did like Ed although I constantly wanted to shake him into better action. However, I felt a little let down at the ending.
