About Book: “Sometimes you have to start with what's lost to truly find yourself...”
Set at the turn of the 20th century, The Dictionary of Lost Words introduces us to Esme, a motherless and curious young girl who grows up at her father's feet while he works on the first-ever Oxford English Dictionary. One day, Esme discovers a slip of paper with a forgotten word that’s been discarded and left unclaimed.
From that moment, Esme begins to collect words for her own secret project: The Dictionary of Lost Words. Her journey takes her through a world on the brink of monumental change—where the Great War looms, women fight for the right to vote, and society is forever altered. Can these lost words from the past help Esme shape her future?
My Thoughts: The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams—a beautifully crafted historical novel that captured my heart from page one.
This story follows Esme, a bright, curious girl discovering the world one word at a time. It’s more than just her journey; it’s a celebration of language, history, and the quiet power of words. Pip Williams masterfully brings the era of the Oxford English Dictionary to life, weaving an evocative tale of empowerment, growth, and change.
One line that truly stayed with me:" And it proves I exist." Simple yet profound, it perfectly encapsulates the depth and poignancy of this story.
Esme’s journey is tender, rebellious, and unforgettable. This book is like a warm, comforting blanket—a perfect companion for a cosy night in. It’s a love letter to books, words, and history, offering surprises and emotional resonance with every turn of the page.
If you’re someone who adores words and the stories they hold, you’ll fall in love with this novel as much as I did.
