Title: Red Line

Author: Blake Rudman

Genre: Thriller, Psychological

Publisher: Hellbound Books

Date Published: 2023

Book Length: 370

Format: E Book provided by the author in return for an honest review

Star Rating: 5***** I loved it, and highly recommend.

About Book: “If Lee Childs’ Jack Reacher or Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt tackled a terrorist scheme that utilized subliminal messaging to sow global social and economic chaos, it would look a lot like Red Line.” Baltimore Police Detective Mitch Wilson wants a nice day out with his wife and son. Instead, they are all caught up in a catastrophic terrorist attack that has repercussions across the USA and triggers events that could alter the course of civilization. Having lost everything, Mitch sets out to seek justice – and revenge and stumbles upon a global conspiracy. On the other side of the world, renowned linguistic professor, Yasaman Karami, flees her native Iran for the freedom of the west; she holds one of the keys to defeating the terrorist organization. Yasaman and Mitch’s worlds collide as, alongside federal agents and allies, they race against the clock to hunt down the terrorist masterminds and prevent worldwide catastrophe.

My Thoughts: The book started with action, and you are immediately hooked, wondering with excitement where the story was going to take you. Right from the beginning there are twists and turns that kept me enthralled. The chapters move between different places and people, seemingly unconnected, but holding the suspense as it moves.

Rudman’s description of the places and people is vivid and brings the story to life as it unfolds, and the depth of the main characters add to the stories authenticity.

Some of the hard-hitting action scenes confused me, but it didn’t detract from the story, in fact I actually, could visualise more in depth the chaos happening.

Red Line by Blake Rudman has so many twists and turns, I didn’t know who to believe. But you become invested in the truth, and Rudman’s writing is testament to keeping your interest piqued. At times I thought ‘this cannot be true,’ but in the next sentence you realise something else is going on.

My favourite character was Agent Noreen Wells, she is a strong foreboding character, comfortable in her own skin and a very capable and driven person.

In conclusion, Red Line is a fast paced, action-packed book that will keep your mind guessing to the very end. The characters are very well thought out and developed and the book has a deeply intricate plot. I can’t wait to see what comes next. A must for fans of action-packed thrillers.

Title: The Journey

Author: Sara Ann Key

Genre: Memoir

Publisher: Austin Macauley

Date Published: 2023

Book Length: 246

Format: Paperback provided to me by the author Sara Ann Key in return for an honest review

Star Rating: 4 **** I liked it a lot and recommend

About Book: Do I attract tragedy? Should I have made better choices? Why is my life and the lives of those before me so plagued? If I got another go, what would I do differently and why? Riches to rags, happiness to despair, for better or worse – this is me. On a journey to find out if love, trust, and faith in oneself is the key to breaking the generational curses that have plagued her family, Sara’s courageous reflections provide a unique and thought-provoking view on the path to discover inner peace and happiness. In this inspirational memoir, a story of triumph over adversity, Sara’s transformational journey highlights the importance of mind and body healing to help achieve our greatest potential by living our truest self. Her story is filled with broken pieces, terrible choices, and very ugly truths. But it is also filled with a major comeback, peace in her soul, and a grace that saved her life.

My Thoughts: "The Journey" by Sara Ann Key is a profound and thought-provoking memoir that takes readers on a deeply personal voyage through the author's life choices and the generational curses that have haunted her family for generations. Sara Ann Key delivers a raw honest, introspection, and the courage it takes to share such a personal narrative. Sara Ann Key's storytelling is both captivating and immersive. Her ability to paint vivid pictures with words allows readers to step into her shoes and experience her life's ups and downs first hand. From the very beginning, I found myself emotionally invested in her journey, eager to understand how her family's history has impacted her choices and shaped her identity. One of the strengths of this memoir is Key's unflinching honesty. She doesn't shy away from the mistakes she's made or the difficult moments she's endured. Instead, she confronts them head-on, offering readers a genuine and relatable account of her life. It's refreshing to see an author who is willing to lay bare their vulnerabilities and shortcomings, as it makes the narrative all the more authentic and relatable. The theme of generational curses is explored in a way that feels both unique to Key's experience and universal in its relevance. Through her storytelling, I was prompted to reflect on their own family dynamics and how they might be influenced by the past. This introspective aspect of the book adds depth to the narrative and encourages readers to think about their own lives in a new light. My only reservation in awarding a full five stars is that I would have appreciated a bit more insight into the author's personal growth and transformation over the course of her journey. While the book is a powerful exploration of her life's challenges, a stronger emphasis on personal growth and overcoming these challenges would have added even more depth to the narrative. In conclusion, "The Journey" by Sara Ann Key is a compelling memoir that offers you a poignant glimpse into the author's life, her choices, and the generational curses that have impacted her family. The book's honesty and introspection make it a worthwhile read for anyone interested in personal growth, family dynamics, and the resilience of the human spirit. A book I would recommend.

Title: Slow Horses

Author: Mick Herron

Genre: Thriller

Series: Slough House 1 of 8

Publisher: Baskerville

Date Published: 2015

Book Length: 336

Format: E book I purchased myself

Star Rating: 4**** I liked it a lot and recommend

About Book: Slough House is the outpost where disgraced spies are banished to see out the rest of their derailed careers. Known as the 'slow horses' these misfits have committed crimes of drugs and drunkenness, lechery and failure, politics and betrayal while on duty. In this drab and mildewed office these highly trained spies don't run ops, they push paper. Not one of them joined the Intelligence Service to be a slow horse and the one thing they have in common is they want to be back in the action. When a boy is kidnapped and held hostage, his beheading is scheduled for live broadcast on the net. And whatever the instructions of their masters at the Intelligence Service headquarters, the slow horses aren't going to just sit quiet and watch.

My Thoughts: Mick Herron's "Slow Horses" is a gripping dive into the murky world of British intelligence, where the outcasts and misfits of MI5 find themselves relegated to the dingy corridors of Slough House, away from the action and the limelight. Despite its sluggish start, "Slow Horses" soon gains momentum and takes you on an intriguing rollercoaster ride through the world of espionage. Herron's writing is sharp and witty, and his characters are complex and flawed in the most endearing ways. Jackson Lamb, the grizzled and unconventional leader of this motley crew, is a standout character, and his irreverent humour adds a layer of dark comedy to the narrative. As the team is reluctantly drawn into a high-stakes conspiracy, the tension steadily mounts, and the plot becomes a labyrinthine puzzle that keeps you guessing until the very end. While the slow burn may not appeal to readers seeking an immediate adrenaline rush, "Slow Horses" rewards patience with a meticulously crafted plot and a deep exploration of its characters' psyches. Herron's portrayal of the underbelly of espionage is both thought-provoking and entertaining. This novel is a promising start to a series that promises to deliver more intriguing tales of the misfit spies of Slough House. If you're a fan of intelligent, character-driven thrillers, "Slow Horses" should definitely be on your reading list.

The stakes could not be higher: if arrested, they will be hanged for their crimes. Can they survive the journey and escape their fate?

My Thoughts: Kate Mosse's "The Ghost Ship" is a beguiling tale that merges history, mystery, and the supernatural to create a haunting reading experience. Set against the backdrop of a rugged coastal town in France, this novel draws readers into its eerie world from the very first page. Mosse's writing is atmospheric and rich, evoking a sense of unease and fascination as the story unfolds. The characters are well-drawn, each harbouring their own secrets and insecurities, adding depth to the narrative. The central mystery surrounding the appearance of a spectral ship on the horizon is both enigmatic and compelling, and Mosse masterfully weaves together past and present to uncover the truth. What sets "The Ghost Ship" apart is its seamless blend of historical detail and supernatural elements. The author's meticulous research shines through, immersing readers in the world of shipwrecks, coastal folklore, and the enigmatic legend of the ghost ship. The alternating perspectives between characters from different time periods offer a captivating narrative structure that keeps you engaged throughout. While the pacing may feel a tad slow at times, the gradual revelation of secrets and the eerie atmosphere make it a deliberate choice rather than a drawback. "The Ghost Ship" is a beautifully written and intricately plotted novel that will appeal to those who appreciate historical mysteries with a touch of the supernatural. If you're in the mood for a chilling and immersive read that will transport you to a world where the line between the living and the dead blurs, then "The Ghost Ship" is well worth your time.

Title: The Cuckoos Calling

Author: Robert Galbraith

Genre: Mystery Crime

Series: Cormoran Strike 1 of 7

Format: Paperback book I purchased myself

Star Rating: 5***** I loved it, and highly recommend

About Book: When a troubled model falls to her death from a snow-covered Mayfair balcony, it is assumed that she has committed suicide. However, her brother has his doubts, and calls in private investigator Cormoran Strike to look into the case.

Strike is a war veteran - wounded both physically and psychologically - and his life is in disarray. The case gives him a financial lifeline, but it comes at a personal cost: the more he delves into the young model's complex world, the darker things get - and the closer he gets to terrible danger . . .

My Thoughts: "The Cuckoo's Calling" by Robert Galbraith, the pseudonym for the literary genius J.K. Rowling, is a triumph in modern detective fiction that leaves readers utterly captivated. With its meticulous plotting, compelling characters, and a dash of classic noir, this novel sets a high bar for the genre. Galbraith introduces us to Cormoran Strike, a private investigator with a troubled past and a keen eye for detail. Strike is a character who leaps off the page, brimming with complexities and a wry sense of humour that keeps you engaged throughout. His assistant, Robin Ellacott, is equally well-drawn, and their evolving dynamic adds depth to the story. The mystery at the heart of "The Cuckoo's Calling" is a labyrinthine puzzle that keeps you guessing until the final pages. Galbraith's writing is sharp, and the narrative is richly textured, immersing readers in the glamorous yet seedy world of celebrity culture and high society. The author's ability to craft a compelling plot while delving deep into the intricacies of human nature is nothing short of remarkable. What truly stands out in this novel is the authenticity of the characters and the meticulous attention to detail. Galbraith explores themes of fame, identity, and the masks we wear in our daily lives, all while delivering a satisfying, old-school detective story that pays homage to the classics of the genre. "The Cuckoo's Calling" is a brilliant start to the Cormoran Strike series, and it's a must-read for fans of detective fiction. Rowling's ability to craft a compelling mystery under a new name showcases her versatility as a writer. This book is a testament to her storytelling prowess, and it will leave you eagerly reaching for the next installment in the series. In short, "The Cuckoo's Calling" is a masterpiece that deserves a place on every bookshelf.

Title: The Rabbit Hutch

Author: Tess Gunty

Genre: Psychological

Publisher: One World Publications

Date Published: 2022

Book Length: 353

Format: Paperback book I purchased myself

Star Rating: 2** It's not really for me

About Book: Vacca Vale, Indiana: recently voted number 1 on Newsweek's list of dying American cities. According to the developers, however, it's a city with a whole history of reinvention, one that 'buzzes with the American spirit.' Not everyone agrees though - certainly not the residents of the Rabbit Hutch, a low-cost housing complex in the once bustling industrial centre, populated by a cast of unforgettable, disenfranchised characters. There's an online obituary writer, a woman waging a solo campaign against rodents and, most notably, eighteen-year-old Blandine, recently released from foster care and determined to stop the developers whatever the cost.

My Thoughts: The Rabbit Hutch" by Tess Gunty was chosen as part of my reading challenge to read a book that was the winner of a National Book Award. The book is a curious blend of mystery and domestic drama, offering you a story that meanders through its plot with a mixture of suspense and family intrigue. Gunty's writing is solid, and the story is filled with intriguing moments that keep the reader guessing. The characters are a diverse and complex bunch, each with their own quirks and hidden agendas, which adds depth to the narrative. The novel explores themes of family dynamics, trust, and the consequences of buried secrets, making for an engaging psychological drama. However, "The Rabbit Hutch" suffers from a pacing issue that might test the patience of some readers. The story moves at a slow and deliberate pace, which, while allowing for character development, occasionally feels overly drawn out. Additionally, the narrative tends to jump between perspectives and timelines, making it a bit challenging to keep track of the various plot threads. The mystery element of the story, while intriguing, may not offer the same level of suspense and excitement as some readers might expect from a thriller. The resolution, when it finally arrives, feels somewhat rushed and leaves a few loose ends untied. In conclusion, "The Rabbit Hutch" by Tess Gunty is a book that showcases promise but falls short of reaching its full potential. It's a story with moments of brilliance, especially in its character development and exploration of family dynamics. However, its pacing and plot structure may not resonate with every reader. If you enjoy character-driven mysteries with a leisurely pace and don't mind a bit of ambiguity in the resolution, "The Rabbit Hutch" might still be worth a read but it was not for me.

Title: The Growing Season

My Thoughts: Seni Glaister's "The Growing Season" is a thought-provoking and imaginative exploration of the choices we make and the things we are dealt with in life, and Glaister excels in crafting complex and relatable characters, each with their own motives, fears, and desires. The narrative structure, which includes multiple perspectives and a non-linear timeline, adds depth and intrigue to the storytelling. However, at times, this complexity can be a bit overwhelming, and some readers may find it challenging to fully engage with all the characters and their subplots. While "The Growing Season" raises profound questions and presents a compelling vision, the pacing can be uneven, with moments of slow development followed by bursts of intense action. Additionally, the ending may leave some readers wanting more closure on certain characters. In conclusion, "The Growing Season" is a captivating and relevant novel that pushes the boundaries of traditional storytelling. If you're looking for a thought-provoking read that challenges your perspective on the future of parenthood and technology, "The Growing Season" is a worthy choice that will leave you pondering its themes long after the final page.

Title: The Promise

Author: Alison Thompson

Genre: Fantasy

Date Published: 2023

Book Length: 160

Format: Paperback book I purchased myself

Star Rating: 2** It’s not really for me

About Book: In a small shore town, Madison, a determined young woman working at a local pizza shop, strives to fulfill her aspiration of becoming an art teacher. As their individual narratives intertwine, the fates of everyone become intertwined as well. Their lives converge in a climactic showdown against Marcus, where the ultimate battle between good and evil unfolds. Love and promises made will be tested.

My Thoughts: "Promise?" by Allison Thompson is not a genre of book I have read but I am trying to expand on the type of book I read which is when I came across Promise? The book is aimed at Young Adults and is a novel that sets out to explore themes of young love, destiny, and the enduring power of promises along with demons thrown in for good measure. While the book carries a heartfelt message and offers moments of genuine emotional resonance, it falls short in terms of narrative consistency and character development. I do think the book is an easy read and is pitched just write for the young adult readers. For myself, I found some things a little far fetched and that was not in the demon’s world. The story revolves around the protagonist, Madison, who was a likeable character. Thompson's writing style is earnest and sincere, which adds a layer of authenticity to the emotional moments in the story. However, "Promise?" faces challenges in terms of pacing and plot execution. The narrative occasionally meanders and struggles to maintain a consistent momentum. Some subplots and characters feel underdeveloped, leaving readers with unanswered questions and a sense of missed opportunities for deeper exploration. The characters themselves, while relatable on some level, lack the depth and complexity that would have made them truly memorable. Madisons journey is at the heart of the novel, but her character development could have been more nuanced. The supporting cast, including potential romantic interests, could have been more fully fleshed out to enhance the overall impact of the story. In conclusion, "Promise?" by Allison Thompson is a well-intentioned novel with a heartfelt message that will resonate with readers who appreciate stories about personal promises and life's unexpected journeys. However, its uneven execution in terms of pacing, character development, and plot progression may leave some readers wishing for a more cohesive and immersive storytelling experience. But while the book was not for me I think the audience it was intended for will love it.

Title: The Counterfeit Detective

Through the diaries, he unearths a series of baffling unsolved murders. He travels through England and Scotland but he realizes that, in order to solve the mystery, he has to travel further, back through time itself.

My Thoughts: I love all things mystery and Sherlock Holmes in particular, and as the blurb about the book mentioned Holmes I was hooked. The book moves backwards and forwards in time and feels confusing to start with and even a little slow, but it is a different style of writing that I quickly got used to and thoroughly enjoyed. I found myself fin the descriptive mode of Grears which was a delightful place to be. It transported you to places never been, but you could believe you were there. The words used to dance on the pages.

I loved the chapter headings along with the quotes The characters are well developed and intriguing and I especially enjoyed the character of John Ledbury. The book had moments of excitement, reflection and pondering a testament to Simpson Grears writing. The story is compelling in the way the prose is written but I did have to concentrate. It is a book I would recommend to lovers of mystery and intrigue.

The vivid descriptions of the changing leaves, charming shops, and quaint place made me yearn for a similar setting to escape to. The seasonal backdrop was not just a setting but an essential part of the story, enhancing the overall experience. The writing style is easy to follow, and the narrative flows smoothly. I appreciated the author's attention to detail and the way they painted a vivid picture of the characters' emotions. The dialogue felt natural, and the banter between the leads was delightful. Title: Through The Snow Globe

Author: Annie Rains

Genre: Romance

Publisher: Canelo Escape

Date Published: 2023

Book Length: 352

Format: E book supplied by Love Books Tours in return for an honest opinion

About Book: If your loved one could stay another day, what would you do?

Diana Merriman is probably the only person in the small town of Snow Haven who isn’t looking forward to Christmas. It’s been three weeks since her fiancé Linus was hit by a car as he biked home from the toy store he owns.

When she uncovers the surprise gift Linus had bought her for Christmas – a snow globe of their town – the night before Christmas Eve, little does she know it will set her on a course that will change everything. Because Diana wakes up to find that it’s the day of Linus’ accident.

Stuck in an endless loop, repeating the day over and over, Diana fights fate to save her fiancé. But it’s not just Linus who needs rescuing. As Diana uncovers startling truths about herself and her relationship, the future becomes even more uncertain…

My Thoughts: Through the Snow Globe by Annie Rains is a cosy romantic novel. However, the book does get off to a slow start and almost feels like it follows a formulaic structure that leaves little room for surprises. But about a third of the way through the tempo and prose shift and the book becomes much more compelling and emotional and I start to become more invested in the lives of Diana and Linus, with their characters fleshed out with depth and complexity making the story all the more engaging. The story becomes much more interesting, the pacing engaging and the writing engrossing. In the end it was a book I did and didn’t want to end –

Did because I wanted to see what happened at the end, the book gave me a roller coaster of emotions.

Didn’t because I was so engrossed and invested in the protagonists’ lives.

In conclusion Through the Snow Globe by Annie Rains is a must read for fans of romance offering a feel-good heart warming escape.
