The Kinship of Secrets

Author: Eugenia Kim

Publisher: Bloomsbury

Date Published: 2019

Book Length: 320

Format: Paperback I was recommended to read by a family member

About Book: In 1948 Najin and Calvin Cho, with their young daughter Miran, travel from South Korea to the United States in search of new opportunities. Wary of the challenges ahead, Najin and Calvin make the difficult decision to leave their other daughter, Inja, behind with their extended family; soon, they hope, they will return to her.But then war breaks out in Korea, and there is no end in sight to the separation. Miran grows up in prosperous American suburbia, under the shadow of the daughter left behind, as Inja grapples in her war-torn land with ties to a family she doesn't remember. Najin and Calvin desperately seek a reunion with Inja, but are the bonds of love strong enough to reconnect their family over distance, time and war? And as deep family secrets are revealed, will everything they long for be upended?Told through the alternating perspectives of the distanced sisters, and inspired by a true story, The Kinship of Secrets explores the cruelty of war, the power of hope, and what it means to be a sister.

My Thoughts: Eugenia Kim's "Kinship of Secrets" is a beautifully woven tapestry of emotions that traverses the poignant journey of two Korean sisters separated by war. Set against the backdrop of the Korean War and its aftermath, the novel follows the lives of Inja and Miran, whose paths diverge when their family is torn apart during the escape to the South.

The author's exquisite storytelling skilfully captures the intricacies of family dynamics, cultural identity, and the enduring ties that bind siblings together. As Inja adapts to life in America and Miran remains in Korea, Kim deftly explores the complexities of their individual experiences and how they grapple with their shared history.

"Kinship of Secrets" is not just a tale of separation; it's a celebration of resilience and the unyielding power of love. Kim's prose is evocative and emotionally charged, painting a vivid picture of the characters' struggles and triumphs. The dual narrative adds depth to the storyline, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the sisters' divergent yet interconnected lives.

Title: Kane and Abel

Jeffrey Archer
Kane and Abel

Author: Jeffrey Archer

Genre: Mystery Historical

Series: Kane and Abel Book 1 of 3

Publisher: Pan

Published Date: 2022

Format: Paperback

Star Rating: 6****** A great book - can't recommend highly enough

About Book: Two strangers born worlds apart with one destiny that will define them both. William Lowell Kane, the son of a Boston millionaire, and Abel Rosnovski, the son of a penniless Polish immigrant, are born on the same day on opposite sides of the world and brought together by fate and the quest of a dream. Locked in a relentless struggle spanning sixty years and three generations, the two men battle for supremacy in pursuit of an empire, fuelled only by their hatred for the other and the knowledge it will end in triumph for one, and destruction of the other . . .

My Thoughts:  Have you ever picked up a book that completely sweeps you away from the very first page? That was Kane and Abel for me. Jeffrey Archer masterfully crafts a tale of ambition, rivalry, and resilience that spans across decades and continents. It’s not just a story—it’s a journey that you live alongside the characters.

We follow two powerful men from entirely different worlds: William Lowell Kane, the wealthy banking heir, and Abel Rosnovski, the penniless Polish immigrant. Their lives are destined to intertwine in the most dramatic and explosive of ways. Archer’s storytelling is razor-sharp, with every chapter peeling back another layer of their obsession with outdoing each other. I was hooked, genuinely hooked and I rarely give a book 6******. But this book deserved every one of them.

What really struck me was the depth of the characters. Archer doesn’t just skim the surface; he digs deep into their ambitions, flaws, and emotions, making you feel every success and every failure as if it’s your own. I found myself torn between loyalty for Kane and empathy for Abel—and that, I think, is the true genius of this book. You don’t just read it; you experience it.

And the pacing? Impeccable. Not a single page felt wasted. I flew through it, eager to uncover what twist or turn would come next. The way Archer weaves historical events into the storyline adds a whole new layer of realism that makes the stakes feel even higher.

If you’re looking for a story that grips you from start to finish, with characters that linger long after you’ve turned the final page, Kane and Abel is absolutely the one. It’s a timeless classic that deserves every bit of its praise.

Title: The Kite Runner

Khaled Hosseini
The Kite Runner

Author: Khaled Hosseini

Genre: Literary

Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing

Published Date: 2018

Book Length: 368

Format: Paperback I purchased myself

Star Rating: 5***** I loved it and highly recommend

About Book: Afghanistan, 1975: Twelve-year-old Amir is desperate to win the local kite-fighting tournament and his loyal friend Hassan promises to help him. But neither of the boys can foresee what will happen to Hassan that afternoon, an event that is to shatter their lives. After the Russians invade and the family is forced to flee to America, Amir realises that one day he must return to Afghanistan under Taliban rule to find the one thing that his new world cannot grant him: redemption.

My Thoughts: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is typically listed as literary fiction, but for me, it belongs equally in the realm of historical fiction, given its setting in 1970s Afghanistan. From the very beginning, I was struck by the beauty of Hosseini's writing. Even though the subject matter is often difficult, his prose is so eloquent that it feels like you're being gently guided through the story, no matter how painful or raw it gets.

What really captivated me was the relationship between Amir and Hassan. Hosseini's descriptions brought their world to life in a way that made me feel as if I was standing right beside them. You can almost feel the tension, the guilt, the jealousy, and above all, the deep friendship that threads through their lives. Every emotion seems to leap off the page, and I found myself becoming completely absorbed in their story.

This isn’t a book to rush through. I found myself savouring it like my favourite dessert, enjoying it piece by piece, page by page. The themes of lost friendship, guilt, and redemption really resonated with me, especially set against the backdrop of such a turbulent time in Afghanistan’s history.

As I kept reading, I noticed a steady build-up of anticipation. Each chapter felt like it was raising the stakes, drawing me in deeper and deeper. I couldn’t stop myself from turning the pages faster, eager to see what was coming next. By the end, I was so emotionally invested that I felt as though I’d been on the journey with Amir and Hassan.

The Kite Runner left me deeply moved. Hosseini has a way of crafting stories that stick with you long after you’ve turned the final page. For me, this was a gripping, heart-wrenching read that I won’t soon forget.
